Dothan Man Arrested for Attempted Murder of Two People

(DOTHAN, Ala.) On October 16, 2026, the Dothan Police Department was called to an address in the 100 block of Jimmie Lane for a shots fired call.  Officers arrived on scene and spoke to the victims, a 17-year-old juvenile and a 21-year-old.  According to the victims, the suspect, identified as Samuel Avery Cook (33) of Dothan, confronted them claiming they were driving too fast down Jimmie Lane.  Cook began assaulting the 17-year-old during the confrontation.

Cook was separated from the victims but returned with a firearm.  Cook made statements he was going to “kill several people” and began shooting at the victims.  The victims were able to hide behind a vehicle that sustained damage from the bullets.  It was discovered Cook was the suspect in a criminal mischief that occurred six days prior after Cook was fired from his job.  Cook, who had a vehicle belonging to the company, made threats to an employee about recovering the vehicle after his termination.  Cook damaged the vehicle and hid the vehicle in a field near his residence.  Further reports indicated Cook had been acting erratically with escalating behavior prior to the shooting.

Cook has been charged with two counts of Attempted Murder for shooting at the two victims and one count of Criminal Mischief 1st degree for the damage of his former employer’s vehicle.  Cook was booked into the Dale County Jail and is being held without bond.
