DOTHAN, Ala. — On September 27, 2026, the Dothan Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Hodgesville Road regarding a male who had suffered a gunshot wound to the lower leg.
Officers arrived on scene and located the male, identified as Mitchell Dean Wilson Jr., 34, of Dothan. Wilson was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Wilson told officers that an unknown male had emerged from the wood line and began firing a handgun, striking him in the lower leg.
Criminal investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation.
During the investigation, investigators observed that the trajectory of Wilson’s gunshot wound did not match his reported story. The location and angle of the wound were inconsistent with Wilson’s account and indicated that the injury was either self-inflicted or occurred at close range.
Investigators continued the investigation and determined that Wilson had shot himself while improperly handling a firearm. The firearm was later recovered during the execution of a search warrant at a residence where Wilson was living.
Wilson eventually admitted that he had lied to investigators about the circumstances of the shooting because he had prior criminal convictions that prohibited him from legally possessing or handling a firearm.
Wilson remained at the hospital to receive treatment while the investigation continued.
Wilson has been charged with one count of False Reporting to Law Enforcement and one count of Certain Persons Forbidden to Carry a Firearm. He is currently being sought by the Dothan Police Department on active arrest warrants.
