Local deaf community recognizes officer

On Saturday, September 28, 2019, members of our local deaf community presented our own Lieutenant Rachel David with an appreciation award. The presentation was made at the Deaf Awareness Picnic held at Eastgate Park in conjunction with Deaf Awareness Month. The event was attended by approximately 100 people.

Ms. Gwen, a member of Dothan’s deaf community, cited Lt. David’s passionate involvement in helping bridge communication barriers faced by the deaf when dealing with law enforcement. Lt. David’s commitment in attending American Sign Language classes offered at the Dothan, Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) was recognized.

Ms. Gwen pointed out that Lt. David regularly helps members of the deaf community even when she is off duty.

Crash on East Burdeshaw

A Dothan Police Officer traveling on East Burdeshaw Street witnessed a vehicle coming towards him lose control and crash entrapping the driver and catching on fire. Within seconds two additional officers arrived to assist and were able to extinguish the fire. Dothan fire department responded and the patient was able to be taken to a local hospital for further treatment. The extent of the driver’s injuries are unknown but a preliminary investigation reveals the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash. Further charges may be pending following the investigation.

Found property

The chest in this photograph was located on Ross Clark Circle by patrol. It contains photographs and family documents we believe are sentimental to someone. If you recognize this chest please come to the front desk of the Dothan Police Department Monday through Friday to claim. You will need to be able to identify the names on documents contained within as proof of rightful ownership. Thanks for sharing.

Message for WestGate park runners from DPD

Dpd would like to take just a moment to give a few tips for our Westgate runners! We are so glad you have such a beautiful park to enjoy. Remember as you are running the trail is marked in zones for your safety so please carry a cellular phone and be aware of your zone you in the event that emergency services are needed. Stay hydrated be mindful of the heat! Watch for cyclists on shared portions of the trail and please avoid cyclist only portions of the trail that are not suited for pedestrian traffic! Please keep all pets on leashes.

Lastly, don’t forget to get your tennis shoes off of your car before you drive away (but if you didn’t follow that tip this morning and these are your tennis shoes we turned then into the tennis complex, they didn’t like being left alone on Whatley Drive!)

All clear at Harvest

DPD responded to the report of a possible gunman armed with a rifle at the rear of Harvest Church. Officers quickly formed two teams that responded to the unknown. We have finished the call and are happy to report there is NO problem at the church and everything is fine. A few things to take away from this, first thanks as always to our citizens who are aware of their surroundings and are quick to report something that seems to present danger to others. We are grateful for the call we received today. Second DPD is second-to-none in public safety! How quickly officers responded, formulated a plan and selflessly encountered the unknown is an example of what they do without recognition day in and day out. Third as a reminder Firearms may not be used in the city of limits of Dothan for birds, squirrels or any other animals. Shooting within city limits particularly in residential areas creates danger and commonly causes understandable alarm for anyone passing by! Good job to all involved.

DPD responds to Westgate Park

This morning Dothan police officers were called to Westgate Park for a suspicious animal on the bike trail….a sick raccoon. The animal appeared confused and disoriented, moved slowly, and had difficulty walking….all signs of rabies!

Thanks to an alert citizen we were able to safely remove a potential public health hazard. Officer Tate was able to collar the animal with a piece of rope, keeping it from running away until it could be turned over to Animal Control.

REMEMBER!!! Vaccinate your pets, pay attention to your surroundings, and report any animal that shows signs of rabies. For more information on the signs and symptoms of rabies, and tips for prevention, visit www.cdc.gov/rabies

* Also…NEVER attempt to pet a wild raccoon. Even if they are not rabid, they can be very aggressive!
