Accidental Shooting Results in Manslaughter Charge

On May 19th Dothan Police responded to a report of a firearm assault in the 2100 block of Baker Trace.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered 19 year old Christian Mullins with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. It was first reported by a friend of Mullins, Fisher Shipes, that Mullins was shot by an unknown assailant who had entered the residence and fled the scene.

Officers determined that story to be misleading and false and learned that Mullins’ gunshot wound was caused by 20 year old Fisher Shipes.

Shipes was transported to the Dothan Police Department for questioning. After interviews were completed, it was determined that Shipes, while consuming an alcoholic beverage, took possession of an unfamiliar shotgun from within the residence. Shipes pointed the shotgun, which he believed to be unloaded, at Mullins and pulled the trigger. Mullins was struck with birdshot in his torso.

Mullins was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for his injury. Unfortunately, due to the severity of his injury he died a short time later.

As a result, Shipes has now been charged with Manslaughter and his bond for that charge has been set at $30,000.00.

The Dothan Police Department would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the family of Christian.
